Low Carb Shepherd’s Pie Recipe

Low Carb Shepherd’s Pie Recipe

One of our favorite meals come fall is shepherd’s pie. In order for me to enjoy this meal, I had to give it a bit of a tweak to make it low carb so as to not bother my heart issues. I make my low carb shepherd’s pie recipe using grass-fed beef but it can be made with ground turkey or lamb. This meal is so easy to make and takes only a few minutes to whip together. Typically, I’ll make enough to throw a few single servings of it in the freezer for days when the family has pizza or spaghetti and I want an easy low carb meal. This recipe includes the original potato option as I usually make both since it is so easy.  Cut the recipe in half if you don’t want to make freezer meals.

Low Carb Shepherd’s Pie Recipe

Serves 8 to 10

Total time: 30 minutes

  • 1 TBS Bacon Grease
  • 4 LBS Grass-fed Beef
  • 2 TBS Minced Garlic
  • 1 Large Onion Chopped
  • 3 Cups Beef Broth
  • 2 Cups Frozen Peas
  • 2 Cups Mashed Cauliflower (my recipe)
  • 4 Cups Mashed Potatoes
  • Salt and Pepper
  • Creole Seasoning

  1. Heat the bacon grease in a large high sided skillet and add the chopped onion. Cook the onion until it is almost translucent. Low Carb Shepherd's Pie Recipe
  2. Add the beef to the onion and begin cooking over medium heat. I like to add the beef broth at this point as the beef has a better smaller texture. If you like larger pieces of beef wait to add broth until the meat is browned, about 5 minutes. Low Carb Shepherd's Pie Recipe Low Carb Shepherd's Pie Recipe
  3. Once the meat is browned add the minced garlic, salt, pepper, creole seasoning, and peas. Stir to combine.Low Carb Shepherd's Pie Recipe
  4. Continue cooking to reduce the broth for another 10 minutes or so stirring frequently. Low Carb Shepherd's Pie Recipe
  5. Place the top oven rack about 6 inches from the broiler element and heat broiler. Low Carb Shepherd's Pie Recipe
  6. Place the meat mixture into separate oiled casserole dishes. I place mine into 3 4 cup casserole dishes and 1 4 quart casserole dishLow Carb Shepherd's Pie Recipe
  7. Spoon the mashed cauliflower (potatoes for the other) over the meat mixture and smooth to cover the meat. Low Carb Shepherd's Pie Recipe
  8. Broil for 5 minutes or until the top is slightly golden brown. Low Carb Shepherd's Pie Recipe
  9. Allow to cool slightly and serve.

Shepherd’s pie is one of those meals that just feels good. Living low carb doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy the foods of old. You simply have to give it a small tweak to conform to your new lifestyle. Does it taste exactly like potatoes? No. But it does taste good and it tastes a heck of a lot better than continuing on a path to poor health. This dish has about 4 net carbs per serving for the cauliflower dish and a ton for the potato version.

I’d love to hear from you!! What is your favorite comfort food for fall?
