What are Essential Oils?

Essential oils are the oils extracted from plants. They may be extracted via steam Distillation (includes hydrodistillation) and Expression. The oils come from the bark, flower, seed, fruit, leaf, or root of the plant. The oils are highly concentrated and have a strong aroma. Only a drop or two are typically used in a setting. Despite the recent popularity, essential oils are not a new thing. They have been used for over 5,000 years. Reference to the oils can be found even in the Bible.

What Oils to Begin With?

There are so many different oils, it can seem overwhelming to begin. One of the very first I started with was Peppermint oil. It has so many uses from headaches to a pick me up. Lemon, lemongrass, eucalyptus, orange, lavender, ylang-ylang, tea tree, and clove oils are other extremely common and useful oils. Most have more than one use and can be blended to create even more products. I like using a blend of peppermint and lavender for muscle aches. Lemon oil, I put in a diffuser to perk me up on a rainy day. Clove oil is great to use for a toothache. Eucalyptus is fantastic for allergies and sinus issues.

Where to Buy Essential Oils for Beginners?

The oils can be found for sale in many different areas. They are now found on the shelves of discount stores, Amazon, and even from home businesses. I’ve used many different brands of oils and really haven’t found a huge difference in the brands. Most are extremely similar and as a frugal girl, I like to choose the ones that do the least damage to my pocketbook but still have good quality. ((I mean, let’s get real here, why pay 50 for a bottle when you can find it for 20?)) Just read the reviews on the products, discount the extremely negative (most are from other oil sellers trying to discredit a new company) and do your research.
