5 Carrier Oils For Blending Essential Oils

Getting into essential oils and learning to use them properly leads one to learn new terms. When I first started using essential oils and someone mentioned carrier oils, I was clueless as to what that was. Later, I figured out that a carrier oil is simply a base oil used to dilute essential oils and absolutes before use. Carrier oils carry the essential oil into the skin and do not evaporate. A good carrier oil should be as natural as possible. The oil will usually be either cold-pressed or maceration produced.

Below are a few of the more commonly used carrier oils and their benefits.

Fractionated Coconut Oil Carrier Oils

Fractionated coconut oil works well for ultra-sensitive skin. It helps keep skin hydrated. The oil is made from coconut oil. It is composed of saturated fatty acids and is rich in medium chain fatty acids. It has a long shelf life and all the good qualities of coconut oil, including an increased stability with the long chain triglycerides removed. It has antioxidant and disinfecting properties. Fractionated coconut oil is one of the most frequently used carrier oils for essential oils because it does not have any noticeable fragrance and it is a very light oil.

It is antibacterial and antifungal, and can be found in many cosmetic products. It helps prevent damage from free radicals and contains many beneficial minerals and Vitamin E.  It has no noticeable fragrance.

Castor Oil Carrier Oils

Castor oil is  used often to help with skin conditions such as acne, dandruff, and eczema.  Because of the stickiness factor of castor oil, it is best used where it will not come into contact with clothing. It is also because of this stickiness that it works so well in locking moisture into the hair and skin. It has excellent moisturizing and emollient properties. The oil is a known remedy for hair loss and thinning eyebrows and lashes. It is made from cold pressing castor beans from the castor oil plant. Castor oil is a clear, extremely thick and sticky oil. It has almost no fragrance.
